Breast Augmentation
Introduction
Breast Augmentation is typically performed to enlarge small breasts or breasts that have decreased in size. It is accomplished by surgically inserting an implant behind each breast. Breast augmentation is done to enhance the size of breasts using inflatable implants filled with either saline or silicone. There are two primary types of breast implants: saline and silicone gel implants. Saline implants have a silicone rubber shell filled with sterile saline liquid. Silicone gel implants have a silicone shell filled with a viscous silicone gel.
Procedure
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that is performed by making an incision under the breast, lifting breast tissue, creating a pocket and then placing implant material underneath. An incision can be made in any one of the following places: crease below breast, around areola, under armpit or sometimes through the navel. Breast implants can be placed either under chest muscles or directly under the bust. In most cases you will receive general or local anesthesia along with a sedative and depending on the extent of the procedure, breast augmentation surgery can last anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours.
Recovery and Final Result
You can start back to work within a few days after surgery. Strenuous activity and physical contact can be started 3 to 4 weeks following the surgery. Fading of scars takes several months up to a year or more in order to heal fully.
