DIEP

A DIEP Flap or Deep Inferior Epigastric Flap or Breast reconstruction using your own abdominal tissue without removing the Rectus Muscle ( main muscle of the abdominal wall) is a relatively new type of breast reconstruction technique pioneered by Dr Robert J Allen in New Orleans in 1992. Using our advanced techniques, any breast size can be reconstructed and restored to a natural contour. Bilateral reconstruction (when both breasts are removed) is especially amenable to our muscle sparing techniques. Reconstruction can take place simultaneous to mastectomy, or at a later time.

The DIEP flap has become an increasingly popular type of breast reconstruction to perform because it does not affect the Rectus muscle unlike the TRAM flaps. Being one of the few Plastic Surgeons in the DC area and for that matter in the country allows my patients to be offered the full spectrum of breast reconstruction options unlike many plastic surgeons who perform breast reconstruction are unable to perform this type of breast reconstruction as it takes additional training, skill and expertise. Having performed and assisted in over 100 of these types of breast reconstruction and having trained under Dr Robert Allen provides me with unparallelled expertise in the overall reconstruction of breasts of which the ultimate goal is to provide my patients with the most aesthetically pleasing breast. Our team at Mountcastle Plastic Surgery strive to provide a caring, compassionate atmosphere in which to provide support before, during, and after surgery.
