Tummy Tuck

Introduction:

Abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to correct excess skin and fat of the middle and lower abdomen. The procedure improves a protruding abdomen and provides a flatter, more toned appearance. Candidates for abdominoplasty include healthy patients who are in relatively good shape but are looking to improve excess skin and fat of the abdomen which have proven resistant to diet and exercise. Patients may also be candidates for a less extensive technique known as a partial abdominoplasty or mini tummy tuck. This procedure is done on patients who may not have as much extra skin and fat in the abdomen.

Procedure

Abdominoplasty takes between two and five hours to complete and can be performed with general anesthesia or with local anesthesia and sedation. A partial abdominoplasty usually takes just one to two hours to complete. The incision made for abdominoplasty is extensive, often running from hipbone to hipbone just above the pubic area. A second incision is typically made around the navel as well. The incision for a partial abdominoplasty tends to be shorter and may not involve the second incision around the navel. Once the incisions are made, the abdominal muscles are tightened, excess fat and skin are removed, and the skin is pulled tight. A new hole is cut for the navel and the navel is then stitched in place.

Recovery

Patients may experience some discomfort after the abdominoplasty procedure and this can be controlled with medication. Swelling and bruising are common and can last for several weeks to several months. Patients will be required to wear a support garment such as an abdominal binder for a period of time after the procedure. Stitches may be removed in about seven to ten days. Most patients are able to return to work within two to four weeks, though more strenuous activities and exercise will need to be postponed for four to six weeks.
