Male breast reduction surgery by our board-certified cosmetic surgeon in Northern Virginia, Dr. Timothy Mountcastle, offers men the prospect of reducing the size of their breasts and improving the look of their chest. Some men unfortunately grow excess tissue in their chest during adolescence. It is often caused by a hormonal imbalance, the consumption of steroids or estrogen-based medications. This can result in an appearance similar to a woman's breasts. Known as gynecomastia, this disorder accounts for approximately 65 percent of all male breast disorders. Men, who are overweight, are encouraged to lose weight prior to undergoing this surgery.
"I have been coming here for several years now. I come here primarily because I trust the people who work here. In the past I tried to save money by trying places that I found on Groupon or Living Social. I had some bad experiences with estheticians who were more concerned with selling services than delivering results. It is different here. I have never felt any sales pressure to purchase unneeded treatments. Instead Amy and Maria take the time to truly assess what treatment will produce the best results. They take the time to get to know you and your individual needs. Many times Amy or Maria have told me not to get a particular treatment that I inquired about because they didn't think that I needed it, or it wasn't right for my skin type. My skin is ultra sensitive and doesn't always respond well to treatments that other people can tolerate. If you are a regular here they will follow up with you to make sure that you get the best possible result. The bottom line is trust. It's your skin, your face, your body, your don't want to trust it to just anyone. I admit that I am very picky and I want to look my best. A lot of getting good results, especially in middle age, is regular treatment, not waiting until there is a big problem to address the issue. I like coming here because they understand that approach. I come every couple of months for tweak here or there and you can't argue with results. I frequently get compliments that my skin looks young for my age."- A.J. / Yelp / Sep 27, 2018

"I sought the services of Dr. Mountcastle's Office for laser liposuction, cellulaze, and the removal of a lipoma. I can honestly say I am extremely happy with the results! As someone who eats well and exercises regularly, it was frustrating to have significant cellulite and areas on my legs that weren't responsive to a healthy lifestyle. My legs now look smooth, toned, and the way I've always wanted them to look. The office is extremely easy to work with and very professional. I would go back for additional procedures in the future."- J.S. / Yelp / Aug 10, 2018
"Great and amazing experience with Dr. Mountcastle and his staff. Professional and friendly in a clean upscale clinic. I did a Lipoma surgery with Dr. Mountcastle 3 weeks ago, the area is healing nicely and the scar is barely showing and after 3 weeks only!"- D.A. / Yelp / Jul 19, 2018
Breast reduction surgery for men is done through a special liposuction technique. Some men with milder cases of gynecomastia may only require liposuction to attain good results. This is performed to remove the fatty tissue residing under the skin. During this approach, a small incision is made around the areola (intra-areolar). This allows access for a suction device to move through the chest and remove fat and tissue. In severe gynecomastia cases, an en bloc resection of excessive breast tissue and tightening of loose skin may be necessary. This includes nipple grafting and may require a staged surgery.
All male breast reduction procedures are performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure at an accredited surgical facility. The surgery typically lasts about an hour. Following surgery, there will be some swelling,ll not. and a compression garment should be worn for 1-2 weeks. Most patients are able to resume normal work schedules within a few days, and incorporate exercise within 4 weeks. This surgery allows men to feel more confident when exposing their chest due to a firmer, flatter chest. In most cases, scarring is inconspicuous.

Male Breast Reduction FAQs
Will This Help my Pecs?
Every man is born with some soft tissue covering his pectoralis muscles. When this breast tissue overgrows into larger breasts, the pecs are often hidden. Through male breast reduction surgery, the excessive tissue is removed so the natural contour and shape of the chest wall can be seen. Men who wish to tone and strengthen their chest muscles will have equal opportunity to do so. Strength training will help lead to optimal results once this tissue has been removed.
Is Liposuction Always Needed?
In most cases, yes. The soft tissue and fat that collects in excess will need to be removed using liposuction. There are many liposuction techniques to consider. Some are less invasive and can help the skin become tighter on the chest wall. These methods can be discussed during your consultation.
What About Scarring?
Incisions for this surgery are well concealed. They are usually placed around or near the areola and are typically small enough that scarring is minimized. Over time, the incision lines will fade and become almost nonexistent for most men.
