As skin matures over time, it loses its natural elasticity. Facial furrows and folds become more apparent, and cause persistent wrinkles and lines. One solution to this is Xeomin (similar to BOTOX), a prescription derma drug that is injected into the facial muscles to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and frown lines. Xeomin is made from botulinum type A, bacteria that create botulism, which blocks nerve activity in the muscles and causes a short-term reduction in muscle activity. This injectable can also be used to treat cervical dystonia and eye muscle conditions caused by nerve disorders, like uncontrolled blinking and spasms. Dr. Timothy Mountcastle offers Xeomin injections at both of the Mountcastle Plastic Surgery & Vein Institute locations in Ashburn or Reston, VA.
What to Expect
Xeomin is usually a 10 to 20 minute procedure. The doctor will inject Xeomin directly into the patient’s facial muscles. Injections may be administered to more than one area at a time, depending on the condition being treated. Patients may be asked to use eye drops, special contact lenses or other devices to protect their eyes during the procedure. No anesthesia is required, but the doctor can use a topical anesthesia or cold pack to prevent or reduce any patient discomfort.

"Amazing!!! Back in September I decided to get a breast reduction surgery and after doing my research and talking to Dr. Mountcastle before when my husband had his surgery I knew he was the one. There are a lot of plastic surgeons out there but Dr. Mountcastle made me feel comfortable he is very nice, friendly and his work is amazing. He spent the time and explained everything about the process so I was able to understand the expectation of the overall procedure. Staff was amazing too! Before and after surgery they were very nice, friendly and helpful as well. They called and checked on me after surgery and any questions I had they called back in a promptly manner. I cannot be more happy with my results. He literally changed my life and I can’t thank him enough."- M.C. / Google / Dec 20, 2018
"I met Dr. Mountcastle over 6 months ago after diligent searching for someone to support me. Firstly, he is super focused, smart and passionate about his craft. What I like most about his team is that they were thoughtful, caring, and patient as I am a scaredy-cat when it comes to any procedure. Today was my big day and while I was so scared Dr. Mountcastle was patient with me and so very kind. I would HIGHLY recommend him. Lastly, I want to that’s Fredah, the scheduling Guru who worked with my busy schedule to make my procedures affordable and timely! Thanks you to the Mountcastle Team. I look forward to sharing this wonderful experience with my network!"- S.H. / Google / Nov 28, 2018
"The best in Northern VA - I've seen Dr. Mountcastle for various treatments over the past 6 years and have always had a wonderful experience with him and his staff. It's clear that he is a true expert in the field of plastic surgery. He and his staff explain everything and put you at ease before, during, and after the procedure. The onsite MedSpa is great too! I wouldn't consider ever seeing any other plastic surgeon."- C. / RealSelf / Nov 26, 2018
After the Procedure
Patients may not begin to see results or improvements until 7 days after receiving Xeomin injections. Some patients may experience side effects including neck pain, dry eyes, headache, eyelid swelling or bruising, and pain or redness at the injection site. Results typically last 3 months. Patients should not receive Xeomin injections within 3 months of the last Xeomin treatment.
Xeomin or BOTOX?
Xeomin is different from BOTOX because it does not contain any additives, which lessens the chances of patients building antibodies against the medication. Patients should not use Xeomin with other botulinum products. During a consultation, the cosmetic surgeon can determine the best botulinum product for each patient.
Yes, Xeomin is an FDA-approved product. Based on two US clinical trials, Xeomin is a safe and effective treatment for adults with cervical dystonia, blepharospasm, facial lines, wrinkles and folds. The US is the 20th country to approve the prescription medication.
Medications and Xeomin?
Medications, such as cold and allergy medication, muscle relaxers, sleeping aids and urinary medications can increase the chance of Xeomin’s side effects. Patients should notify the cosmetic surgeon if they are currently using any blood thinners or antibiotics.
Missed a Treatment?
Patients should not worry if they missed a Xeomin treatment. Xeomin injections have a temporary effect, and are given months apart. Missing a dose is not harmful to patients.
