While the visible signs of aging can’t be avoided, they can be dramatically minimized by our board-certified cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Mountcastle. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photo Rejuvenation is a laser treatment used to balance skin tone, and reduce the amount of sunspots and age spots. At our Ashburn, VA Mountcastle Medical Spa & Laser Center, IPL is given as a non-invasive procedure that reduces the appearance of Rosacea, redness, broken capillaries and mild acne scars on the face, neck, chest and hands. Men and women who have mature or sun-damaged skin are the ideal candidates for IPL as it provides them with continual, natural improvements.
Before the laser treatment begins, a cold gel is applied to the area being treated, and patients are given protective eyewear to wear throughout the procedure. Using the IPL hand piece, the physician pulses light to the skin’s surface. Without damaging the skin, the laser is absorbed by the dilated vessels or pigmentation. The heat from the laser causes damage to the vessel or lesion, so the body begins a natural healing process. After the treatment is complete, patients can immediately return to normal activities. Redness or blotchiness may last for up to 1-2 hours after the procedure.

"This review is for the IPL-BBL treatment for age spots. In past years, I have wasted many thousands of dollars on IPL (non-BBL), microdermabrasions, chemical peels, facials, and products to treat dark spots that started showing up in my mid-fifties. IPL-BBL from Mountcastle is the only one that has made a huge improvement for me. After treatment, many of the spots turned almost black before they healed, and I was warned that this would happen. After my first treatment, it took about a week to completely heal and see the full results, and they were amazing. I had one blotch that was so deep it felt leathery. Although the blotch still exists, it is lighter and smaller and no longer feels or looks like leather. I purchased four treatments and I had my second treatment yesterday. I can see many spots turning dark now, so I know they will heal and look better next week. Many of the spots on my face have completely disappeared. I don't expect to be spot-free after this second treatment, but I am getting there. If all continues to go as remarkably as I expect, I plan on doing my hands next. Ragan was my aesthetist. She is excellent. She answered all my questions and she suggested some products to use at home. She used an IPL machine that has a cooling feature, a real plus. I felt a hot snap and an instant cooling at each spot. It wasn't painful enough to make me jump and it's well worth the results. I have one minor complaint: They don't always answer the phone or return calls promptly."- M.M. / Yelp / Mar 08, 2017
"Wonderful Experience. Very easy to schedule appointment. Staff very nice. Ragan was great - very knowledgeable. Beautiful and clean facility. Would highly recommend."- S.Z. / Yelp / Mar 08, 2017
What to Expect@headingTag>
A physician or trained medical staff member can perform an IPL Photo Rejuvenation laser treatment on patients. The procedure is gentle, safe and non-invasive, which allows for little to no recovery time. A full series of the laser treatment includes 3 to 4 sessions, with each session lasting 20 minutes every 3 weeks. Some patients may experience a slight sting, similar to the snapping of a rubber band, while the skin is being treated. All IPL treatments are customized to each patient’s skin type and condition to provide the best possible, long-lasting results.

IPL Photo Rejuvenation FAQs@headingTag>
Improvement can be seen after each treatment, but the best results can be seen a month after a full series of treatments is completed. It’s common for patients to respond differently to each treatment session. Patients will see a gradual improvement of redness, blotchiness, sunspots and age spots over time.
Most patients experience mild side effects like temporary swelling, redness, crusting, bruising or superficial blisters. These subside within a day or two after the procedure.
Do I Need to Prep for IPL?@headingTag>
Patients about to undergo an IPL laser treatment are usually asked to avoid self-tanners and excessive sun for 2 to 4 weeks prior to the procedure. They should discontinue the use of minocycline, tetracycline, doxycycline or Retin-A/Renova several days before each treatment, and may be asked to take aspirin or ibuprofen a week before the procedure to help prevent bruising. Patients should also protect the treated areas with sunscreen between sessions.
Are Patients Sun Sensitive?@headingTag>
Patients will not be sun sensitive, but they should keep in mind that excessive sun exposure will affect the results of the procedure. Patients should always wear sunscreen to protect their skin, and decrease the appearance of redness, brown spots, wrinkles and skin cancer.
Why so Many Sessions?@headingTag>
A full series of IPL Photo Rejuvenation sessions are required in order to provide gradual, natural-looking improvement with little to no risk of the patient’s safety. Multiple sessions also allow for longer-lasting results.
