About Varicose Veins

My name is Timothy Mountcastle. I am the medical director and I am a double-board certified general surgeon and plastic surgeon.

My name is Kaitlin Buehler and I am the surgical registered nurse at Mountcastle Plastic Surgery and Vein Institute.

One in every eight people have varicose vein disease, some manifestation of it. It can be as subtle as just a little leg swelling, you put your sock on, notice a little ring around your ankle. That can be an early onset of chronic venous insufficiency, which is basically there's certain veins in your legs which are not emptying properly and bringing the blood back to your heart. To the full constellation where you start getting massive leg swelling and even ulcerations on your leg, discolorations on your legs. That's kinda the end stages.

Over time we have learned techniques to be able to do these in the office and now it only takes about 10 minutes to do a vein procedure, 10 to 15 minutes. You're typically here for about 30 to 45 minutes. Most of it's prepping and draping and sterilization. Then we map everything with our ultrasound and then there's wrapping in compression wraps at the end and cleaning up the patient, but the actual procedure itself is only about 15 minutes.
