Chemical Peels for Sun Damage and Melasma*

Procedure Details

Often times, sun damage can easily be treated on lighter skin types with patients that have concerns with pigmentation. However, melasma needs to be treated differently, as it is typically hormone related and is triggered/darkens from things besides the sun such as heat, stress, and hormone fluctuations. Since heat is one of the main triggers of melasma, IPL generates heat in the skin which can cause a "rebound effect," and can cause the pigmentation to darken. Chemical peels can dramatically fade melasma, especially with the help of an at-home pigment suppressor and Retinoid such as SkinMedica's Lytera 2.0 and Retinol Complex. Typically, a series of 3-6 chemical peels are needed depending of the severity of the pigmentation and the desired outcome.
