Botox vs Dysport – Which Is Right For You?
At Mountcastle Medical Spa, we use a variety of injectables to help our patients reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Two of the most popular are Botox and Dysport, but which is right for you?
You are most likely already quite familiar with Botox…the injectable that relaxes muscles that cause wrinkles such as crows feet, forehead lines, amongst others. Botox has been FDA approved and available for over 20 years and its safety and effectiveness are highly proven. Botox is marketed by Allergan, whose other products include a line of fillers, skin care products, breast implants, and more!
Dysport is a newer injectable (came to the US market in 2009, but has been available in Europe since 1988) and works similarly to Botox to relax facial muscles and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. A company called Galderma markets Dysport. They also market Restylane and Sculptra.
So if both Botox and Dysport work to relax the muscle, what’s the difference? Let’s take a look!
Effectiveness:
Botox and Dysport are both highly effective, but you will need a different amount of each product. For every 1 unit of Botox used, 3 units of Dysport are needed. Dysport starts working within 3-5 days, while Botox can take up to 2 weeks. Both typically last about 3-4 months, but length can vary by patient and are used.
Areas of use:
Botox and Dysport can be used in the same areas of the face. Dysport tends to spread more, which can be helpful for larger surface areas like the forehead, crows feet, and wide glabellas (but because of this, there is a chance that it can spread to muscles you don’t want to target). Botox injections can be stronger and better at targeting specific muscles.
Cost:
Botox and Dysport cost about the same and each manufacturer offers rebate programs for patients. Mountcastle Medical Spa often has specials on each product too!
The best way to determine which product is best for you is to schedule a skin consultation at Mountcastle Medical Spa. Both Amy and Meredith are master injectors and can come up with a customized injection plan to meet your skin goals.
